Liao Qian/
b. 1998
Joss Liao (they/them) is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Guangzhou, China, Joss spent their life living in Singapore, Shanghai and the US. They received their BFA from Glass Department at Rhode Island School of Design in 2021. As a chronic trauma survivor, Chinese femme and bilingual & multicultural creative, Joss is devoted to making space and taking space in the form of art.
Joss makes works across various mediums centering topics of violence, intimacy and post-trauma survivorship. As a survivor of domestic violence, socio-political trauma and sexual assault, they aim to inspire resilience and empowerment through their works. They seek sensual representation of the body in pain—an inseparable part of womanhood. To accurately represent the nuanced intensities of those visceral experiences, Joss draws parallel between the skin-like qualities of glass and the metaphoric body. Elastic, meditative and provocative, their works manifest membrane qualities and spark nuanced emotional affects through glass in forms of sculptures, installations and videos. Through their works, Joss hopes to make space for shared tenderness, radical vulnerability and creative healing.
